Many customers ask us at Bella Umbrella what the difference is between an umbrella and parasol. Plain and simple, a parasol is to block the sun and an umbrella is to block the rain:) All umbrellas can technically be parasols if you use it to block the sun. It’s actually what you are trying to do with the parasol or umbrella that makes it a parasol or an umbrella versus what it looks like. Granted if you use a lace parasol to try and block the rain that wouldn’t work for the long-term or be very effective but the parasol would be technically an umbrella.
A classic parasol usually includes lace, is ornate and has the dual purpose of blocking sun and being a fashion statement.
A classic umbrella is water-proof and can come in many shapes and sizes. As long as it keeps you dry it’s doing its job.
